Give the item a good rubbing down first, this gives the new paint something to key into and stops it flaking off later. A roller is much easier to get a good finish with if you have not had much experience with a brush. Best of all is to use cans of spray paint. Give lots of thin coats because it will run if you try to give one thick coat. To have no brush strokes, it is better to use spray paint. A very smooth roller will not leave brush strokes, but it does leave it's own ';pattern';.
