The pitch on a roof is how high the peak is...or the slope of the roof...and the sand in the paint is for traction on a floor so you dont slip when you walk on it if it gets wet...
He meant roofing tar. Go to Home Depot or Lowes and they will tell you what you need and how to do it. You might even find a demo on YouTube. I saw some on home improvement.
